The City of Cape Town says through the
new specialised marine and environmental enforcement unit they are starting to
achieve results especially with illegally poaching.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and
Security JP Smith said this week the unit together with table Mountain National
Park observed three vessels that were acting suspiciously. They monitored them
and saw them offloading several bags into vehicles.
Smith added that the unit then arrested six suspects who were caught with rock lobsters.950 rock lobsters and west coast lobsters which were undersized in many cases.
Smith said most of the lobsters were in bearing which means they were carrying eggs which is extremely unfortunate thing because that will prevent species like this from being able to breed and replenish their numbers. This makes their act particularly problematic and unacceptable.
“The message to poachers out there is the
past you had too little attention paid to your deeds but the City of Cape Town
will be giving you meaningful attention Smith added.
