The South African United National Anti-nuclear Mobilisation Initiative said the decisions around a nuclear build programme are not the right move.

TSUNAMI Spokesperson Muna Lakhani said not only is nuclear the most expensive energy option it is also dangerous.

Lakhani added that the rollout of renewable energy is not only less expensive than nuclear but can also produce industrial volumes of electricity.

“Civil society in South Africa is very concerned about the future of our country and are in support of the national union of mineworkers and of Cosatu in raising the turns around plans by government to continue its plan for Nuclear fleet for sacking in our country.

We think both is a poor idea, both in cost as well as in generating decent work for our people. We would like to support Cosatu and NUM and call upon our government to move away from this unsustainable programme.” Likhani added.
