The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative for Southern Africa Clementine Nkweta-Salami said having a functioning system is crucial to making sure that those displaced by violence and conflict are able to receive protection.

She was speaking at an event on Friday as the world commemorated World Refugee Day.

Nkweta-Salani said UNHCR recognises the steps the Department of Home Affairs is taking to address the country’s overwhelmed asylum system.

Nkweta-Salani said asylum seekers should not be seen as competition but as an incentive and in working can improve lives socially and economically.
