Minstrels given authority to organize and run festivities

On Monday, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ask for financial support to the Minstrels, Malay and Christmas Choirs.

Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has pledged an amount of R2.37 million for the 2014/15 financial year.

The events involved include the Christmas Choir Bands March, usually held on December 24, the Malay Choir Nagtroupe March on December 31, and the Tweede Nuwejaar Minstrel March.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube said the process of the 2014/2015 year were done differently to the previous years due to the Minstrels given authority to organize and run the festivities.

“We have pledged an amount of R2.37 Million and this money will be given for the events that occur in the time after Christmas and New Year’s Gwarube added.
