SA to not meet 2015 deadline for digital migration

Lusanda Bill
13 November 2014

Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi says South Africa will not meet the 17th of June 2015 deadline for digital migration.  Minister Muthambi said the country is in the process of implementing a roadmap for digital migration.

While addressing the media in Parliament on Wednesday Minister Muthambi said she has already consulted with various stakeholders to pave a way for a successful delivery of the project.

She said a recurring policy question was whether South Africa should still continue to roll out the setup boxes or leapfrog directly to IDTV.  However after extensive consultation with various stakeholders a conclusion was reached that STB’s must remain as the preferred device to be used for digital migration in the country.

Meanwhile Minister Muthambi says in spite of outstanding policy matter there has been significant progress to revive discussions on the strategic and operational aspects of the digital migration project.

“Our creative industries can flourish in a converged environment that opens up new trade opportunities and cultural interactions with the rest of the world. A new policy and regulatory framework is needed to support these outcomes” Muthambi added.
