WCED to compensate fee paying school

Lusanda Bill
17 November 2014

The Western Cape Department of Education will be paying out just over R44 million to fee paying schools in compensation for fee exemption granted in 2013.

The Departments Jessica Shelver said the number of pupils who now qualify for an exemption in the province has increased.

Shelver said we cannot ignore that we are living in tough economic times and many parents simply cannot afford to pay their schools fees.

Shelver emphasised that the department has support initiative for a system that compensate schools for exempt school fees, as we recognise the importance the role the fee exemption play in granting access to the poor.

“Parents qualify for an exemption if the school fees are more than 10% of the parents combined annual salary.  Every child has the right to education and we are delighted that we can assist these schools with this kind of compensation” Shelver added.
