43 motorists arrested for drunk driving in the Western Cape

Western Cape Traffic Authorities conducted 24 roadblocks across the province over the weekend whereby 2 353 vehicles were stopped and checked.

1 400 motorists were screened and 43 were arrested for drunken driving.  Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the highest reading recorded was 1.61mg per 1000ml and that was six times over the legal limit of 0.24mg per 1000ml.

We also tested the speed of 6151 motor vehicles and prosecuted 613 drivers for exceeding the speed limit.

The total amount of fines that we issued was R349 650.

Meanwhile during the roadblocks one person was arrested for reckless and negligent driving in Worcester and another person was arrested for being in possession of dagga also in Worcester. 

Another person was arrested in Verdenberg also for being in possession of Kat. 

Six fatalities were recorded over the weekend throughout the province.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said Friday afternoon a head on collision on the road between union dale and George where one person got killed in that accident.

Africa said on Saturday in Kraaifontein a pedestrian was knocked over and killed.

"In Prince Albert road the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West a bakkie and a truck collided,one person in the bakkie died in that accident Africa added.
