AgriSA says the latest rolling blackouts in
the country is affecting farmers and the entire agriculture sector
negatively.
Eskom introduced load-shedding last month
following the collapse of a coal silo at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga and the ageing
infrastructure which has been lacking in maintenance for the past 15 years.
AgriSA President Johannes Moller said load
shedding prevents farmers from conducting irrigation processing and harvesting.
Moller said there are a number of
processing stages that need to happen using electricity especially in the fruit
industry.
“We use a lot of electricity for cooling
purpose and the latest blackouts is affecting the industry financially” Moller
added.
