Western Cape MEC of Education Debbie Schafer on Tuesday welcomed the judgment handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal regarding the closure of 17 schools in the province.

Former MEC of Education Donald Grant in 2012 earmarked the closure of the 17 schools due to underperformance and decrease in pupil numbers.

Back in 2012 the decision was challenged the provincial South African Democratic Teachers’ Union and the schools governing bodies.

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said while we can claim a victory for us this is really a victory for the learners, because the judgment makes it easier for us to improve education opportunities.

Shelver said we will study the judgment carefully and we will take into considerations the recommendations made by the court.
