On Tuesday, Western Cape MEC
of Culture Affairs and Sports Nomafrench Mbombo launched the departments
“Respect Campaign” in Kayelitsha.
MEC Mbombo delivered her
pledge speech urging community leaders to take action against women and child
abuse.
Traditional leaders were
amongst the dignitaries who attended the event.
Mbombo said as the Western
Cape government, we believe that, with the support of all role players in our
society such as parents, civil society, traditional leaders and role models, we
can create a sustainable culture where we respect and protect one another.
Mbombo said this pledge and
campaign is the first of many steps to achieve this goal.
Mbombo said one of the biggest
challenges to periodic campaigns such as the 16 Days of Activism is the lack of
continuity from year to year.
Mbombo said this campaign is a
plea to the people of the Western Cape to Create a Culture of Respect and take
a stand against the abuse of the most vulnerable people in our society.
“We encourage the rest of the
province to join us so that we can be better together Mbombo added.
Meanwhile traditional leaders
were also granted an opportunity to address the community during the launch of
the campaign.
Chief Johnny Jansen of the
Cochoqui Cultural group said, it is important for the community to restore
humanity amongst our nation.
Jansen said he is proud of
being an African in Africa among people who love their country and are proud to be South
Africans.
