Sadtu in the WC to study judgement on school closures

Lusanda Bill
11 December 2014

The South African Democratic Teachers Union in the Western Cape says it will always protect the interest of learners and parents. This follows the judgment on Tuesday by the Supreme Court of Appeal granting the Western Cape Education Department to close 16 of the 17 schools.

Former MEC of Education Donald Grant said the reason for the school closures was because of underperforming and decrease pupil numbers.

Sadtu’s Jonavon Rustin said it is always a sad day when any school gets closed especially in the communities where the school is the nucleus of criminal activities.

Rustin says our legal team is currently studying the judgement and we will take instruction from the legal team on the way forward, whether we should appeal this matter to the Constitutional Court.
