The Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public
works Donald Grant said there was a slight decrease in the number of road
fatalities in the province in the first 14 days of this month, compared to 2013.
Law enforcements will over the festive
season be focusing on areas such as drunken driving, speed and most importantly
fatigue management.
MEC Grant said pedestrian deaths still
remain unacceptably high.
Ministerial Spokesperson for Siphesihle Dube
said of the total 49 deaths in the first 14 days 34 of them were pedestrians,
and the 34 deaths are up by 26%.
Dube said we have seen in recent studies
that there is a connection between pedestrian fatalities and alcohol consumption,
and we warn against excessive consumption of alcohol if you intend on driving
or walking.
