Over the past weekend Western Cape traffic
authorities arrested 42 motorists for drunken driving at roadblocks in Gordon’s
Bay, Muizenberg and Kraaifontein.
Meanwhile a 52-year-old motorcyclists was
arrested last week in the Bellville/Stikland area on several charges including
being over the legal blood-alcohol limit and resisting arrest.
Mayoral
Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says after a fifteen minute
chasing collided with one of the traffic vehicles and came to a stop.
Smith said he was found to be twice over
the limit of blood alcohol limit and was arrested for drunk driving,
recklessness and negligent driving defeating the ends of justice, failing to
stop and resisting arrest and malicious damage to property.
He added that it also emerged that the
suspect from Bellville is an unlicensed driver. During operations focusing on
the illegal drag racing in Eerste River and Bellville South, officers arrested
two motorists one for reckless and negligent driving and another one for drunk
driving.
“The drunk driver was found with a glass in
his hand that he claimed is a cool drink but we soon established it was
alcohol. When testing him it was found that he was three times over the limit”
Smith added.
