City of Cape Town extends informant reward system

The City of Cape Town has announced that it will be extending its informant reward system to clamp down on illegal dumping.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said illegal dumping places an enormous burden on the city’s resources and ability to deliver services to residents as it costs an estimated R350 million a year to deal with this issue.

Smith said we have had some success in tracking down those responsible for dumping as evidence by the case a couple of weeks ago in Philippi with the medical supplies that got dumped.

“However at the moment it is simply too difficult for us to have officers everywhere, we will need to rely on the public to come forward with information. In this regards there are already many good members of the public who are giving us information, but I am also realistic and I know that there are many people who will only be motivated by some kind of reward” Smith added.
