Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has clarified reports about operational date for the Medupi power station.

Some reports have suggested that the station will be fully operational in June this year.

However in a statement Deputy President Ramaphosa said Unit six at Medupi is expected to be fully operational in June this year, but Medupi will only be functional in 2020.

Deputy President Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said Medupi as a whole is only expected to be running at full load in 2020, instead of Unit 6 only, as Mr Ramaphosa had stated.

He said that Unit 6 is currently producing power while continuing with verification tests to ensure optimal tests. The unit is operated at various load levels to do tests. By end June the unit is contracted to produce the full 800MW on a continuous basis.
