20 arrested for drunken driving during roadblocks in the Western Cape

Western Cape Traffic Authorities conducted 24 roadblocks across the province this past weekend where 2 162 vehicles were stopped and checked.

1 175 drivers were screened and twenty were arrested for drunken driving.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa the total amount of fine that they issued was R243 650 and they also tested a speed of 6 054 vehicles which we prosecuted 889 drivers for exceeding the different speed limit.

The highest speed recorded in the province since Friday was 184km/h in a 120 zone near Breckenfell, a 144km/h in a 100 zone between Worcester and Paarl, a 122km/h in an 80 zone on the N2 near Knysna and 182km/h in a 100 zone betwwen Beafourt West and Oudstoorn.

Meanwhile also during the roadblocks a truck driver was arrested in Beaufort West for overloading his vehicle and one person was arrested in Oudstoorn for driving with excessive speed.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said only three fatalities were recorded over the weekend in the province.

“One pedestrian died in a motor vehicle accident, just outside De Dorrns, another pedestrian died in a motor vehicle in Morresburg accident and one person fell of the vehicle.” Africa added.
