The South African Municipal Workers Union
in the Cape metro Region will be embarking on a strike
action starting on the 4th of May.
Samwu Regional Secretary Mikel Khumalo said
this follows the suspension of the strike for ninety days for the City of Cape Town to deal with the
grievances of the various depots which they have not resolved until now.
Khumalo said instead of the city engaging
with the union on the issues it is threatening to approach the court seeking an
urgent interdict to stop the strike action.
Khumalo said it is a challenge that many
workers are dismissed and disciplined numbers everyday and some are appealed
against the unfairness of their dismissals and yet the city is not granting
those appeals.
Khumalo said we have seen the city not
filling many of the vacancies that exist within the municipality where the
money is being directed towards the EPWP’s so called project, which we believe
those jobs are of a permanent nature and the city should fill in those
vacancies.
