Amnesty International- South Africa today said authorities must ensure that all detained persons are enabled to both contact their lawyers and challenge the detention and orders for deportation.

Research and Advocacy director for Amnesty International Africa, Netsanet Baley said Amnesty International is urgently calling on South African police and immigration officials to fully and immediately comply with the high court order not to deport hundreds of refugees and migrants arrested under the Fiela operation immediately.

Baley said we are extremely concerned about the on-going outrageous violation against the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in South Africa.

Baley said we are extremely disturbed that this comes at a time when many are still caught up in the trauma of what happened in the past few weeks of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.
