ANC WC condemns Khayelitsha fire deaths

The African National Congress in the Western Cape has condemned the fire which killed four children in Section-U Khayelitsha and left twelve displaced.

The ANC in a statement said Cape Town’s history of urban fragmentation with regard to land use policies and service provision has spatially intensified the concentration of poverty within the city’s historical confinements.

ANC’s Yonela Diko said they cannot isolate the fact that it is specifically the Western Cape Government that refuses to make changes in this province that results in these yearly atrocities.

“We can’t continue to have these nearly winter atrocities that are caused by fire, that are caused by winter.” Diko added.

He concluded by saying that what the Western Cape government is saying by increasing the budget on emergencies, is that they are ready to treat people like charities when emergencies happen, instead of ensuring that the accidents are prevented by giving people proper houses and placing them in land that is conducive for living.
