Civil society organisations including Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce say governments Operation Fiela serves to entrench negative stereotypes and justify violence against sex workers.

Operation Fiela was launched in the wake of last month’s xenophobic attacks which resulted in seven people being killed.

3 914 arrests has been made during the operation, with 2 264 were of South Africans for crimes including the illegal possession of firearms and drugs.

Sweat’s Cherith Sanger said they believe that Operation Fiela directly will be targeting sex workers and more so migrant sex workers will be more vulnerable through this Operation and its implementation.

“The money that has been used to implement this could be used better somewhere, for example we know what the numbers are in relation to money being spent on policing sex work and we believe this will further be  a waste of money that has been put into it,” Sanger added.
