WCED to investigate bus accident outside Stellenbosch

Western Cape MEC of Education Debbie Schafer said the department is currently investigating the accident which happened this morning on the R44 just outside Stellenbosch, which left 31 children injured.

This is after the bus they were in lost control and overturned. Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said MEC Schafer visited learners at Stellenbosch Hospital and they are relieved that the learners at the hospital have since been discharged.

Shelver said we are obviously hoping for a speedy recovery for the remainder of the learners and the driver involved in the accident.

“Councillors and social workers were sent to the hospital and to the school and our officials are working with the school to keep parents informed and to arrange counselling and the necessary support.” Shelver added,

She reaffirmed that the department will obviously investigate the accident fully, in line with department’s procedure.
