The Western Cape first quarter tourism arrival figures show an increase of 6% year on year and domestic arrivals increased by 5%.

Western Cape MEC of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde said through project Khulisa, tourism has been identified as a priority sector for the next five years.

MEC Winde added that the project which is currently worth R17 billion employs over 200 people on a formal basis.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronwynne Jooste said overall over 2014 passenger numbers increased by 300 000 from the previous year.

“This is excellent news for our local tourism sector, which you know is one of our fastest growing sectors and we know that every ten tourist one job is created. So this is a great boost for our economy and our people,” Jooste added.
