DA calling for parents to educate their children about sexual health

Lusanda Bill
23 July 2015

The Democratic Alliance believes that parents must educate their children about sexual health in light of the recent signing into law of the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Bill.

The law was amended so that consensual sex between two children aged 12 and 16 years will not be regarded as a criminal offense.

Spokesperson on Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Jane Sithole said what we are saying is that as much as schools are doing sexual education, we as parents also need to take the front role and teach our children about the consequences of engaging in sex at such a young age.

“If you think of a child of 12-years it is really a child in terms of their thinking but the law says if it is consensual then there is nothing wrong with that. So as parents we need to protect and educate our children” Sithole added.
