ACDP: FASD is leading cause of mental retardation

The African Christian Democratic Party said, the World Health Organisation has revealed that the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is the leading cause of mental retardation in South Africa.

ACDP’s Cherellyn Dudley says, a study has found that FASD affected people typically have a disrupted school experience with suspensions, expulsion or dropping-out.

She said the Home of Hope in Cape Town provides professional training and awareness workshops on FASD.

Dudley said the African Christian Democratic Party calling on the Department of Social Development and Health for increased diagnosis services and a central data base so that relevant training can be accessed.

She said woman are empowered when they avoid any possible damage to their children through alcohol consumption.


“Children with behavioural problems add to the stresses and strains on the family, community and government budget” she concluded.
