Western Cape Nature Reserves says two structures have been lost following fires which started due to lightning strikes on the De Hoop nature reserve on Monday.

Cape Nature Spokesperson Justin Lawrence says Cupidoskraal which forms part of the multi day whale trail hike was burnt down as well as the Lekkerwater cottage

Lawrence added that all hikers were safely evacuated from the trail on Monday afternoon following lightning strikes which caused the fires. There have been no injuries.

“A combination of inaccessible terrain and high winds made it difficult for firefighters to work overnight. Ground crews from Cape Nature, Overberg District Municipality and Working on Fire continued to fight the fire today.” Lawrence said.
