56 learners from 12 Western Cape high schools will be competing for top honours in the provincial safety debate competition at the University of Cape Town tomorrow.

The competition will be hosted by the Department of Transport and Public Works and the UCT Township Debating League.

The Department hopes this event will help raise road awareness among high school students.

The Department’s Communication Officer Byron la Hoe said the competition utilizes the World School Style debate format.

“This innovative participatory education approach to road safety awareness encourages young pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers to become responsible road users,” La Hoe added.

He concluded by saying the five best debaters will go on to represent the Western Cape at the national road safety debate competition in Gauteng from 5 to 9 October 2015.
