The City of Cape Town will open two new Disaster Risk Management volunteer bases in Mitchells Plain and Ottery today.

The operation is led by Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

The latest additions bring the number of city-wide volunteer centres to 12 in total. Another three facilities will open by the end of December 2015.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith says we are very proud of these people who have spent and sacrifice their personal time to make an impact on the world around them.

Smith added that “We are very proud to have people like that associated with the city and giving them these base stations to work from is our way to say thank you and acknowledge what they are doing”.

“We starting with Mitchells Plain, this is a promise we made two years ago to them that we would launch this base station when the Mitchells Plain base volunteer group was our volunteer group of the year. So we are delivering on this promise now and we will be extremely proud to be handing over the keys” he concluded.
