The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape has called the community of Lugelweni Village not to take the law into their own hands, following the death of a 30-year-old man.

Police Spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni said the victim is alleged to have been stoned to death by an angry mob.

“The community was complaining about the alleged deceased’s involvement in the killing of other people in the village.” Tonjeni said.

“It is alleged that on 20 September 2015, a group of young people from the village mobilized themselves to go to the deceased’s place to assault him. When the deceased saw them coming, he ran away but was caught by the mob and assaulted with stones and later died.”

Tonjeni said they will not tolerate this behaviour, because avenge seekers become criminals themselves and Saps will have no option but to arrest them for their unlawful actions.
