Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has revealed South Africa's road death toll exceeds the global average.

Peters was leading a discussion at the National Road Safety Strategy Engagement and Development Summit in Johannesburg.

Various road agencies and NGOs have gathered at Gallagher Estate today to make their contribution to a new road safety strategy.

The minister says “I will then present a document before Parliament on the resolutions made at the summit today.”

She says “Road carnage in South Africa is at shocking levels. She says road deaths have a negative effect on the economy too.”

Peters says her department is working with the justice ministry to ensure harsher penalties for irresponsible motorists.
