Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of two African National Congress activists, police said on Friday.

Police spokesman Captain Musa Ntombela confirmed on Friday that the three had been arrested in Pietermaritzburg’s central business district on Thursday.

Ntombela said intensive investigations had led to the arrests so soon after the shooting on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday evening ANC ward 12 activists Badedile Tshapa, and Phetheni Ngubane, were shot at as they returned from a branch election team meeting at Mehlokazulu High School.

Tshapa died on the scene while Ngubane died in hospital later on Thursday.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and two others injured on Friday evening after a three-vehicle collision on the M1 Highway opposite the Southgate Shopping Centre in Mondeor, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said “Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the north side of the highway completely blocked by wrecked vehicles and debris”.

He said “On inspection, paramedics discovered two lifeless bodies lying inside the car”.

The cause of the collision was unknown. Police were investigating further.
