The Gauteng Health Department has confirmed that one of the twins born on the side of Tom Jones Road in Benoni this week has died.

The mother was part of a group of 38 Malawian nationals stranded on a broken bus in Gauteng for a month.

Health officials say the infant passed away due to complications caused by the premature birth.

A woman who helped deliver the twins on the side of the road was distraught when she found out one of the infants had passed away.

The department has offered its condolences to the mother of the baby, adding that it will ensure the surviving child pulls through.
