A female student at the Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape, fell to her death from the balcony of a university residence in East London.

Confirming the incident, WSU spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said “The student was rushed to Frere Hospital, where she died”.

Tukwayo said an inquest had been opened by police.

She said “The University had assisted the family, and had offered students who witnessed the incident counselling by a WSU psychologist”.

Meanwhile, one person is believed to have died and 14 injured in a three-car pile-up on the N2 near East London yesterday.

The accident in the vicinity of the Gonubie Farmers’ Hall turn-off is believed to have been triggered by the wreck of an earlier accident.

Dynamic Ambulances’ Melissa van Rooyen, who was among the first on the scene, said “Four people were critically injured and 10 were being treated for less serious injuries”.

She said “It appeared that the driver of a Polo slowed down to navigate the way past the wreck when an Avanza crashed into it”.

“After the Avanza crashed into the Polo, a taxi came and added to the pile-up.”

Van Rooyen said the three vehicles were headed towards East London.

“One patient was confirmed to have died on the way to hospital, with others sustaining minor to moderate injuries,” said Van Rooyen.
