The death toll in taxi violence in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape has risen to five.

Last week, heavily armed assailants randomly opened fire on shoppers and commuters near a taxi rank, leaving 15 people seriously injured.

Eastern Cape Safety and Liaison MEC, Weziwe Tikana has warned taxi associations that permits will be withdrawn if the fighting over routes doesn't stop.

Tikana added that, “We have agreed that we have to engage, otherwise if they continue to fight we will have no other option either than the withdrawal of the permit.”
