Eight pupils have been arrested following violence at the Joe Slovo High School in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats.

They allegedly burnt down two classrooms during protests over alleged ill treatment.

Angry pupils set two structures alight on Wednesday, leaving charred remains of what was once a classroom.

They are unhappy with having to pay between R2 and R5 penalties for late-coming.

Parents, learners and teachers met to discuss the problems yesterday. The provincial education department has condemned the burning of school infrastructure.

It has however called on schools to ensure that the code of conduct is in line with the constitution.

In the meantime Classes have been suspended.
