Police on standby in Langa after protests

Law enforcement officials remained on high alert in Langa on the Cape Flats overnight.

This follows violent protests in the area which saw the post office being torched and shops looted.

Police have arrested 40 people on a charge of public violence.
Around 30 police vehicles and a police helicopter were used to disperse protesters.

Stone throwing resumed at police and private motor vehicles.


The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says, The Post Office was burnt out, with substantial damage to the building and there was an attempted break in at Shoprite.
