At least 42 people died over the long weekend in Limpopo
The transport minister Fikile Mbalula has warned drivers about speeding and drinking and driving, following the number of crashes in separate accidents in Limpopo over the 16 June, long weekend.
In Maphalle Mopani a local taxi collided with a bus on R81 killed 24 people, It’s believed that the along R81 accident, the local taxi was overloaded with 10 people over its capacity. Limpopo Transport and Community Safety Department’s Joel Seabi said those who don’t abide by the law will be severely dealt with. The Road Traffic Management Corporation said one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the other.
In another accident, six people were burned beyond recognition after one of the vehicles burst into flames after two cars collided near Dingamazi village.
Two died and 80 others injured on one horrific accident happened between three cars near Letsitele and Gravelotte. Meanwhile, Transport Department Minister Fikile Mbalula was expected to visit the scene of the R81 accident later on Tuesday morning. President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed shock, saying he was heartbroken; he also wished the injured a quick recovery. Families of the victims of the R81 crash received messages of condolences Minister Mbalula was expected to visit the province and address the traffic authorities regarding the recent spate of fatal collisions in Limpopo province.
