Widow appears in court over alleged R700K RAF fraud

A woman who had claimed that her husband died in car accident, when in actual fact it appears that he fell off a bridge, appeared in the Gqeberha New Law court on Tuesday.

Marlene Pietersen (42) appeared in the Gqeberha New Law Court yesterday on fraud allegations after her arrest by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team on the same day. It is alleged that On April 2018, Pietersen submitted a false RAF claim on behalf of her husband who died after falling off a tree.

Pietersen claimed that her husband had died in a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Joubertina on July 2014, the Hawks said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to The Hawks, the RAF discovered inconsistencies and then lodged a complaint with the Hawks, which culminated in the arrest of Pietersen on Tuesday. The RAF was rescued from a potential prejudice of R700 000.
