Radio journalist attacked in Khayelitsha

A journalist at Bush Radio’s sister station was attacked after covering a story in Litha Park, Khayelitsha on Monday.

The Zibonele FM journalists were on the scene to cover the incident of a foreign national who was found dead inside his shop. The incident took place at Litha Park in front of the shop situated close to the station.

In a statement, the station’s CEO, Mawande Jara, said that angry protesters attacked the journalist – the reason being unknown.

Jara added that police who were on the scene failed to protect the journalist

According to Jara, the police manhandled the journalist and threatened to throw the journalists to the protesters

‘’The station will take further steps by reporting the matter with the Independent Police Investigative directorate (IPID) for investigation into the conduct of the members of the SAPS that were present on the scene. The matter will also be reported to the Press Council as the rights of the Journalists were infringed. It is our considered view that they were hindered from performing their task and we would like the above authorities to make an immediate intervention on the matter,’’

Jara condemned the attack.

“We condemn the act of criminality that our Journalists found themselves facing. The people who attacked our journalists are the people who live among us, the community that we are set to serve.’’
