Fourth quarter crime stats released

 The Police Minister Bheki Cele released crimes statistics for the fourth quarter of 2021-2022 today.

He stated that  despite the latest crime statistics showing a decrease in some crime categories, there has been an increase in murder and rape cases between January and March this year.

The fourth quarter crime statistic, from January to March this year, showed a 22.2% increase in murder and an increase of 13.7% for rape cases.

The police minister said that  SAPS recorded a surge in the killing of women and children in the first three months of the year. After he had promised that government was intensifying its efforts to fight against gender-based violence.

Major-General Norman Sekhukhune told members of parliament’s portfolio committee on police said that 27 police officials have been killed while on or off duty.
