Hanover Park Parolee arrested for possession of narcotics

Metro Police arrested a 26 year-old suspect for the possession of drugs in Hanover Park on Saturday.

Officials found 25 units of heroin inside his shoes during the search operation.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said, when the suspect was booked at the Philippi Police Station, officers discovered that he is out on parole for a previous murder conviction.

“It’s an unfortunate reality that many people who are paroled end up in the system once more, and it poses serious questions about our criminal justice system, and particularly the rehabilitation of offenders, as well as opportunities to turn over a new leaf once released," he said.

Smith then highlighted that it`s trivial to give the police resources if the same perpetrators are being arrested again after being released from prison.

“The City’s enforcement agencies are making hundreds of successful arrests on a weekly basis, and very often, the same persons are arrested time and again. We’ve said it before, there is no point increasing policing resources if the system as a whole is not properly integrated to effectively deal with those committing crime,” he added.
