Hawks arrest murdered cops sister-in-law for murder

The Hawks have confirmed the arrest of a 49-year-old woman connected to the murder of a Cape Town police sergeant, who was gunned down in front of his home in September 2022.

Sergeant Sithembiso Mnatwana, was returning home from his shift when he was murdered. He was stationed at the Cape Town Central Police Station.

Hawks’ spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase said its National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) team arrested the woman on Friday.

‘’A warrant of arrest was issued against Rulwa-Mnatwana, and she was apprehended on Friday, 10 February. She appeared in the Athlone magistrates court the same day of her arrest and the case was remanded in custody.’’

“Further probe revealed that Babalwa Rulwa-Mnatwana, 49, married to the deceased brother, allegedly hired a hit man to kill the police official,” Nkwalase added.

The motive for the killing is still unclear.

She is expected to be back in the court on Thursday for a bail application.

The Hawks are yet to arrest the alleged hitman.
