Tshwane has no mayor after Murunwa Makwarela disqualified for insolvency

The City of Tshwane has no mayor following the disqualification of Cope councillor Murunwa Makwarela, who was elected mayor last week. City of Tshwane City manager Johann Mettler has written to the Gauteng IEC indicating the vacancy for the mayoral position.

According to the Constitution and municipal legislation, Makwerela is insolvent and cannot be elected as mayor.

However, in an interview Makwarela stated that he won’t back down but he would immediately approach the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria to interdict the announcement of his sudden exit made by City Manager Johann Mettler.

“The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of SA's process which eventually saw him ushered in as Cope’s sole councillor in Tshwane was properly followed” said Makwarela.

Makwerela was elected with the support of ANC and EFF councillors in Tshwane.
