The police’s Joseph Swartbooi said that the elderly woman sustained fatal injuries.

‘’ Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint on Monday 17 April 2023. Upon their arrival in Jakkalsvlei avenue at around 08:10, they found the body of a 63-year-old female. Reports suggested that the victim was hit by a motor vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

‘’We can confirm that the driver of the motor vehicle, a 66-year-old male has since been arrested and detained. Bishop Lavis police registered a culpable homicide for further investigation,’’ he added.

Swartbooi urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111

Meanwhile, Sub Council 15 Chairperson, Angus McKenzie has condemned the incident. McKenzie initially thought a taxi driver was behind the incident.

‘’ A taxi driver has been arrested after an adult female was knocked and died on the Jakkelsvlei Bridge coming from Valhalla Drive in Kalksteenfontein. It is alleged that the taxi driver drove on the opposite side of the road when the accident occurred.’’

‘’We have consistently warned and engaged on the reckless driving by taxi drivers in the morning peak with a number of taxi insisting on using Bonteheuwel as shortcut to various other roads. I want to thank the team from Cape Town crime and traffic as well our police and law enforcement officers for their very quick and swift reaction.
