Easter & Ramadan period sees a decline in blood donation - WCBS

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all eligible donors to donate blood as it is facing a shortage in blood stock.

The WCBS says they only have a 3-day blood supply in O- blood group. The O- blood group can be transfused to all blood groups. The WCBS says it aims to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days for each blood group. Other blood groups that are experiencing a shortage are A+, B+ and B- blood groups.

According to the provincial blood service, blood stock levels in the Western Cape usually decline during the Easter period as many enjoy the public- and school holidays. Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS, says additional pressure has been added this year, as Muslim donors are fasting, due to the holy month of Ramadan.

‘’WCBS encourage all blood donors to find their closest blood donation clinic in support of the many patients who need blood during this critical period. No matter who you are or where you are from, we urge you to donate blood. Do something remarkable, donate blood,’’ says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS.

In order to donate blood, you need to be between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle. Donating blood only takes 30 minutes of your time, and you can save up to 3 lives with 1 donation.  Donors can donate blood every 56 days.

For more information or to find your closest blood donation clinic, download the WCBS app on Android and iOS devices. Alternatively, send a WhatsApp on 060 549 7244 or visit www.wcbs.org.za
