Two suspects arrested linked to Thabo Bester's escape from prison

Two suspects detained in connection with the daring jail break of Thabo Bester, a convicted murderer and rapist, are expected to appear in court on Tuesday in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

A 39-year-old former G4S employee and a 65-year-old man from Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal were both charged with assisting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody.

The two were arrested over the weekend by a specialised team investigating Bester's escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

“The former G4S employee was arrested at his residence in Bloemfontein on Saturday, while the 65-year-old man was arrested on Friday at his home in Port Edward” said SAPS in a statement.

It is also said that Bester escaped from the facility in May 2022 in a tactic that involved his prison cell going up in flames, which held the nation and exposed the incompetency of the Department of Correctional Services.

Bester was arrested together with his alleged Dr Nandipha Magudumana by Tanzanian authorities on Friday and a Mozambique national.
