Two off-duty police sergeants killed in Khayelitsha

Two off-duty police sergeants were killed in two separate incidents in Khayelitsha on Sunday evening.

In the first incident, a 36-year-old police sergeant based at the Elsiesrivier police station was driving in Solomon Tshuku Street in Site C at approximately 17:30 when a gunman approached the vehicle he was driving and fired several shots at the driver.

The police’s Novela Potelwa said the sergeant was rushed to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries

Meanwhile, another police sergeant was shot while he was with friends at Mandela Park by yet-to-be identified gunmen in an incident suspected to be robbery related. The police sergeant was working at Nyanga SAPS.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bongani Maqashalala says the management of SAPS in Province is disheartened by the loss.

“The two police officials were in the prime of their lives. They still had a lot to offer to the communities of the Western Cape. As the management of SAPS we will continue to keep the bereaved families in our thoughts and prayers.’’

Western Cape SAPS are probing two cases of murder; No arrests has been made.

The Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen,

‘’My stance is very clear that an attack on any law enforcement officer, which includes SAPS, is an attack on the State. I condemn the attack strongly and urge anyone with information to contact any law enforcement agency so that the perpetrator can be apprehended and convicted.’’

‘’We have been making positive strides to reduce the murder rate. Criminals are on intent to work against us to reverse the progress. I would like all our officers of the law to be extremely vigilant and resolute in crime fighting efforts. These or any other criminal activities should never be allowed and they should never be getting away with these crimes. They should get the full might of the law,’’ he added.
