Five children killed and several others injured in Brackenfell crash

Five children were killed and several others injured when the bakkie they travelled on, rolled on the R300 in Brackenfell, on Sunday night.

ER24’s spokesperson, Russel Meiring said its medical services and other services arrived after 11p.m to find a bakkie upright on the centre lane. He added that several patients, including children, were seen scattered around.

‘’Medics assessed the patients and found that five children aged between one and seven had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead,’’ said Russel Meiring, ER24’s spokesperson.

‘’Six other patients, including children, were assessed and found with injuries ranging from minor to critical,’’ he added.

Meiring said paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.

The Western Cape’s Mobility MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, has sent his condolences to those affected.

‘’I would like to send my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. I’m sad that we once again lost little angels in a bakkie crash. These children still had a bright future ahead of them.’’

Mackenzie urged road users to be extra cautious.

‘’The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage and authorities are investigating. I urge everyone using our roads to be extra vigilant. Please do not speed, stop and rest when tired and do not use a cellphone while driving,’’ said Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape’s Mobility MEC.
