ANC's Dullah Omar region elects new leaders

The Western Cape ANC’s largest region, the Dullah Omar region, elected new leaders this past weekend, as we head closer to 2024 general elections.

The region, named after anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Dullah Omar is the biggest contributor in terms of ANC votes in the province, but the Western Cape has been without elected leaders since the regional structure was disbanded last year.

On Thursday, the party’s newly elected provincial secretary Neville Delport claimed all the issues that led to the disbandment of the regional executive committee (REC) have been resolved.

Delport said the region had about 11,000 members and remained the party’s largest in the province. He estimated the provincial membership to be between 70 000 and 80 000.

About 300 voting delegates elected their new leaders in the eigth Regional Executive Committee, on Sunday.

Ndithini Tyhido, who is Khayelitsha Development Forum’s chairperson, has been elected as the new chair of the ANC’s Cape metro region.

Sonwabile Ngxiza was elected deputy chair, Mvusi Mdala as regional secretary, Maureldia Chowglay his deputy and Lynne Abrahams as treasurer.
