Atleast eight people died after storms swept through the Western Cape

Damaging winds and heavy rains lashed the province over the long weekend, resulting in widespread flooding and severe damage to electrical infrastructure.

According to the City of Cape Town, the weather has since improved, and mopping-up efforts and damage assessments are about to get started.

Four victims were found in the COVID-19 informal colony in Driftsands, according to city officials, and four minors were found in the Philippi east neighborhood.

When police arrived to the Philippi informal settlement of Klipfontein Mission Station on Monday, they discovered locals pulling four boys' bodies out of a nearby dam. They were pronounced dead at the scene, and an inquest has been opened as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Rescue personnel started looking for a person Monday who washed away in the floodwaters in the Bo Radyn neighborhood of Villiersdorp.

A man who got bathed in Botrivier was found clinging to a tree.
