LEAP officer recovering in hospital after he was shot in Khayelitsha

Western Cape police are probing a case of attempted murder after a Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officer was shot and wounded in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. The incident occurred on Tuesday night.

"According to reports, the victim was seated in a law enforcement vehicle when he was approached by unknown suspects who shot him. The victim managed to drive away from the scene to a fire station, where he received treatment. He was transported to a medical facility for further treatment. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg.

The Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, said he is angered by the incident and has called on anyone with information to come forward.

"I'm deeply angered by the shooting of LEAP officer Gift. The 30-year-old officer who works at the Bishop Lavis base, was shot multiple times. It's alleged that he came under fire in Khayelitsha when he stopped to get something to eat. At this stage, the motive seems to be robbery, as his service firearm and bulletproof vest were taken.’’

‘’It is becoming crystal clear that both law enforcement and SAPS are being targeted… Just as with any attack on any law enforcement or SAPS officers, I also regard this on an attack on the state. The relevant laws and charges should be added. Like all other criminals, we need these criminals behind bars,’’ added Allen.
